Elliot R. Goodman, MD was born in England and received his undergraduate and medical school education at Cambridge University. He moved to the USA in 1990 and trained in general surgery at Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY from 1990 to 1996. He spent two years as a research fellow at Columbia University working with Mark Hardy, MD in the field of cellular transplantation and immunology. During his fellowship, he presented his findings at various national and international meetings and published his work in many peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Goodman joined the medical staff of Beth Israel Medical Center to expand its bariatric surgery program in January 2004. Prior to moving to Beth Israel, Dr Goodman was on the staff of Montefiore Medical Center and the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY for over four years. Before this, he was on the faculty of the New Jersey Medical School and was the co-director of the University Institute for the Surgery of Morbid Obesity in Newark, NJ.

Dr. Goodman is an active member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. His clinical interests include general and bariatric surgery. His research interests in the past have concentrated on the field of cellular immunology. More recently, however, his research laboratory has been focusing on mechanisms of gene expression in fat cells before and after gastric bypass surgery.
